Why Holland America Line Cruise
Holland America Line has a commitment to Alaska that continues to grow. During its long history as a leader in premium Great Land Cruises and Cruise Tours, the company has created jobs, partnered with local businesses, and promoted Alaska travel as well as Native culture and history.
- 1st Alaskan Cruise Company
Starting in 1975 with just one vessel in Alaskan waters, Holland America Line has steadily increased its presence to 159 sailings on 8 five-star ships including three Vista-class vessels - ms Oosterdam, ms Westerdam and ms Zuiderdam. The line's Signature of Excellence initiative launched in 2003 earmarked $225 million for product enhancements designed to provide guests with the most distinctive ships at sea and the most spacious accommodations in the premium cruise category.
After 59 years of operations serving visitors in Alaska, Holland America Line now owns the best infrastructure of hotels, buses, rail cars, special attractions (Gold Dredge #8, Yukon Queen, mv Ptarmigan, etc.) than anyone else in Alaska. Because they own their Alaska CruiseTour infrastructure, passenger's vacations go much smoother than with their competitors.
Most people feel that a Holland America Cruise exceeds their expectations!
- Continued Growth and Enhancement
The company also took steps to enhance guest satisfaction for upcoming Alaska seasons with extensive hotel, rail and motorcoach upgrades. In just the past three years, Holland America Line's capital expenditures for Alaska and Yukon have totaled nearly $100 million. The new McKinley Explorer railcars, the largest passenger railcars in the world, introduced many cutting-edge amenities. Subsidiary companies, Westmark Hotels, which operates the largest hotel chain in the region with 11 hotels and inns in 10 communities across Alaska and the Yukon, and Gray Line of Alaska, feature Alaska's most celebrated attractions.
At the end of 2003, Holland America Line announced a new initiative, known as the "Signature of Excellence." Under the initiative, the line is spending $225 million to enhance its fleet in areas of guest accommodations, public rooms, dining, service, and enrichment programs. All of Holland's ships will have undergone an extensive dry-docking, and emerged with the full "Signature of Excellence" refurbishment; the cruise line expects the program to be installed fleet wide by the end of 2005.
- Offering the Unique and Unexpected
Extraordinary respect for the world's natural wonders is at the core of the Holland America Cruise experience. A full day of cruising in Glacier Bay, a new port call at Icy Strait Point, leisurely two night stays at Denali National Park, wildlife-viewing tours of Kenai Fjords, fly-in excursions to Gates of the Arctic, day boat excursions to Portage Glacier via the line's mv Ptarmigan and explorations along the Dalton Highway to Prudhoe Bay are popular tour highlights. The company also features the gold rush legacy of the Klondike and offers Yukon River cruises aboard its own mv Yukon Queen II to Dawson City where the 1890's come to life.
Recently introduced Alaskan Cruise Tours spotlighting Kluane National Park and Tombstone Territorial Park take visitors to parts of the Great Land few ever see. These remote, rugged landscapes are untamed in every sense of the word. By partnering with Parks Canada, Holland America Line has pioneered an exclusive program of intriguing hikes guided by Park Interpreters as well as other unique travel opportunities like rafting the famed Tatshenshini River. A new Kenai Peninsula and Homer Explorer Cruisetour goes off the beaten path to showcase a region of Alaska not included by other major Cruisetour operators.

"I would highly recommend Dick and Janet of The Cruise Company. They came out to our home and sat down with us and went through the brochures.
