Seward/Anchorage Nestled on the shores of Resurrection Bay and backed by towering Mt. Marathon, the downtown district of Seward invites you to stroll and shop (lunch is served aboard your ship). Then, meet your Tour Director and step aboard a luxury motor coach to sightsee along the Seward Highway, an Alaska Scenic Byway. Watch for nesting birds in Potter's Marsh and Beluga Whales along Turnagain Arm. Then check into your downtown hotel and enjoy 'big city" excitement - Alaska style. |
| 9 |
Anchorage/Denali National Park Board the McKinley Explorer, the largest domed railcars on the historic Alaska Railroad route, an Alaska Scenic Byway. Sit back and relax in the observation lounge and watch the Matanuska Valley glide by. Watch for views, weather permitting, of four towering peaks - Foraker, Silverthrone, Deception and, of course, McKinley. Have lunch and enjoy the thrilling crossing over Hurricane Gulch. Upon arrival at the Denali National Park, transfer to your inviting lodge, the best at the park. After settling in to your room, get out and explore. You can hike to Horseshoe Lake or hop a shuttle to the new Denali Visitor Center. Organized flightseeing, horseback riding and golfing tours are another option. And there's tasty barbeque and a hilarious musical revue to enjoy at the optional Cabin Nite Dinner Theatre. |

Denali National Park Your EXTRA DAY at Denali begins with an early morning departure for the Denali Tundra Wilderness Tour. Travel 53 miles of the Park Road from Healy Ridge and Savage River to Polychrome Pass and Stony Hill Overlook, an overlook where Mt. McKinley, just 36 miles away, reveals its full vertical rise. Great horned owls, snowshoe hare, red squirrels, black magpies and gray jays are a few of the smaller mammals and birds that are often sighted throughout the Park. Moose and caribou seek out meadows and braided rivers. Dall's sheep cling to the upper slopes of Igloo and Cathedral Mountains and grizzlies are known to frequent Sable Pass. Later return to your lodge to relax or take your choice of optional activities. You can tour via helicopter, horseback, jet boat, mountain bike or river raft. Meet dog mushers, homesteaders and trappers to see what life is like in the bush. Anything is possible and your comfortable room welcomes you after every adventure. |

Denali/Fairbanks This morning, sip an espresso by the fire in the Main Lodge and relax over breakfast at your choice of eateries. Later, reboard the domed railcars of the McKinley Explorer for the continuation of your rail journey. You?ll travel through the scenic Tananan-Kuskokwim Lowlands, cross the Mears Memorial Bridge and the Chena River before pulling into Fairbanks. A short transfer takes you to your downtown hotel for a two-night stay. |

Fairbanks Your EXTRA DAY in Fairbanks starts at the riverboat landing. Here, you'll board a sternwheeler Discovery III for a cruise along the storied Chena and Tanana Rivers. Soak up native culture, gold rush history, and local color as you visit a replicated Athabascan native village and view native crafts, see a fishwheel in action and watch a dogsled demonstration. You'll see a bush pilot take off and land on the water and meet Susan Butcher of Iditarod fame, or members of her family, at her famed sled dog kennel. At Gold Dredge No. 8, a National Historic Site, you get to browse the mining exhibits, pan for gold and enjoy a hearty miner's stew in the dining hall. Tonight, take advantage of the Midnight Sun and venture out to Pioneer Park for an authentic Alaskan Salmon Bake (optional). Say "good-bye" to your Tour Director and bid Alaska farewell tomorrow morning. |
